What Is This Post?
A memo for anyone who's taken an overnight bus to Kyoto and has no idea where to go because it's way too early in the morning, or way too late at night (myself included……).
Early Morning Edition: Around 5 AM (Men Only)
First off, it's basically safe to say there isn't a single cafe around Kyoto Station open from 5 AM.
Also, since you just got off an overnight bus, odds are you didn't get to shower the day before!
So, head to a sauna!
My recommendation is Rumor Plaza
Since it's early morning, take the bus to get there. (JR buses should be running even at that hour.)
It's open from 6:00–10:00, and you can even pay extra for breakfast.
Plus, since towels are provided, you don't need to lug around any extra luggage.
You probably didn't get much sleep on the overnight bus anyway, so this is a good spot to grab a nap too.
Late Night Edition: After 11 PM
Late at night, a public bathhouse isn't a bad option either! Kyoto has plenty of them.
But at 11 PM, chances are you're actually in the mood to get some work done!
So let's head into a cafe!
I wouldn't recommend Starbucks! Because everyone else is thinking exactly the same thing!
Better to quietly head to Caffè Veloce instead. It has a huge number of power outlets.
The McDonald's at the Central Exit isn't a bad choice either, but it's crowded and hard to settle into, plus there aren't many outlets. On top of that, the signal can feel a bit shaky — maybe a Rakuten Mobile thing — so the Caffè Veloce at the Central Exit is the safer bet.
The catch is it's only open until 22:45…… After that, you'll just have to give up and wait outside (lol)
Overnight Bus Essentials
Buses in summer are surprisingly cold. The AC always seems set for someone's grandpa!
Make sure to bring a blanket and thick socks.
Earplugs and an eye mask are essential too. Even if you don't plan on sleeping, they make a huge difference in comfort!
Have a great trip〜〜
